Dawn's blog
For the record: I am going on a 10-Day tour to Honduras, Bahamas, Cuba, Curacao, and Greenland to perform stand-up with the troops. My tour mates are Matt Baetz, Melinda Hill, and Steven Briggs.
The tour officially starts tomorrow morning when I meet my tour mates at the gate in the Atlanta Airport, bound for Honduras. Once we’re there, I’m told that we will be doing a radio interview for Armed Forces Radio Network and then performing for the base that night. My first set will be 20 minutes, which is nice…in LA, it’s rare to get 10! Am I excited? Yes. Am I nervous? Absolutely. But today, I fly to Atlanta from Denver. I stayed in Denver for a few days in the hopes that my nephew would come early and I could be there to support my sister. It didn’t happen. But it’s okay. I got to spend some quality time with my family and I’m happy for that. I will see the new bambino at Christmas time. The most exciting thing about tonight, besides having my own hotel room and getting a full night’s sleep before the trip (my poor tour mates are taking red-eyes!), is that I get to see my dear friend Necarrus. She was a teammate of mine in AmeriCorps*NCCC and I haven’t seen her in 14 years. She is my Oreo Sister, me being fair skinned and her being dark skinned. I am picturing her face when she sees me: her big, wide eyes and gap-toothed grin that brings cheer for miles. Our embrace will be full of love and I’m looking forward to spending time with her. I hope to capture the moment on video. Update… I just got to my hotel. Seeing Necarrus was wonderful. We got to catch up over dinner and drinks and I look forward to seeing her again…perhaps in LA, or in her home for some southern home cookin’! Every day, I strive to… Be the light I wish to see in the world.
